What do I want to say in a blog?
I recently heard an interview on the radio with Nancy Wilson (of Heart), and she says “I love talking about music”. It was a great interview, she has a lot of interesting stories. So she can talk about music, and I’ll talk about- what ? ART!
The other day I was at a show and was talking with a woman who was looking at my paintings. She said she liked Monet, and I said I do too, but in reality I like lots of painters. And what I want to see in a painting is an interpretation of the subject- the vision and the mood and what it triggers in the artist, and the person looking at it. Not interested in an exact replica of whatever the painter sees. We have cameras for that, and great photographers. But in my opinion we are asking the painter for more than realism.
And actually that interpretation stuff is a big part of “Impressionism” so I guess that brings us back to Monet and his Impressionist friends. For me, when I finish a painting and I’ve been able to be loose and interpretive- that’s where I want to be. For a couple examples of what I’m talking about check out Summer Haze and Liberty Stores on my website under “landscapes”. I’m showing you what I’m looking at, but through the lens of what I want you to see. Sometimes what I want you to see is planned out, and other times it just comes out as I’m painting.
I think what I’m trying to say is that I don’t want to just paint things, I want to paint the feeling that the subject and the moment of time can give us.
